France 1940. A British fighter plane is shot down by the Nazis. Crawling out of the wreckage is a
badly burned and wounded lone survivor who luckily is found by a French couple. Over the course
of weeks, they nurse him back to health at their small family farm. The man doesn’t speak but his
eyes shine with a terrifying light. After a Nazi soldier finds the farm and threatens to kill the farmer,
the now not so silent man strangles the soldier. Explaining that names are dangerous in these
perilous times the farmer christens him the Shadow.
After the Shadow departs from the farm to make his way to the coast, the Gestapo arrives and kills
the French couple. The Shadow sees all this from a nearby hillside and rather than trying to make his
way home, vows to exact vengeance on the Gestapo. What follows is a one man war behind enemy
lines as the Shadow mercilessly slaughters any Nazi that he finds.
This is not your father’s Shadow. This is something more relentless and brutal. Some of the pages are
faded but that shouldn’t take away from one’s enjoyment of this book.
