This novel is a story of life in rural South Devon at the time of the author’s birth, in the first decade of the twentieth century. It was a time when farming was the life blood of Devon, and this is well reflected in the story. Louise, essentially the heroine of the story, was probably typical of her generation, having grown up with a strong respect for family and her elders, and being of a most pleasant disposition. But all of the characters, family members and farm hands, doctors and lawyers, fair people and gypsies, local tradesmen, the inevitable villain, and the handsome beau from away, were all part of the local community. Together they make the story and reflect the life and times of South Devon.
