A First Latin Reader

A First Latin Reader

ByRichard Augustus Agincourt Beresford

Usually printed in 3 - 5 business days
This book is an attempt to make more interesting that elementary stage of Latin Translation which precedes an entry upon the difficulties of Caesar The First Part is confined entirely to sentences, introducing mainly such words connected with warfare as a boy will most frequently meet with in Caesar. The concrete, we know, will always appeal to a boy's mind in a way that the abstract can never do; the Illustrations have consequently been made as numerous as possible. In Part II a few fresh words are introduced as a heading to each piece, by way of vocabulary: it is suggested that the meanings should be learnt by heart, and the words fully looked up in the complete vocabulary at the end of the book. The pieces in Parts II and III, with a few exceptions which have been taken or adapted from Latin authors, are original; the sources being mainly classical. The subjects chosen may give, it is hoped, an idea, though of the slightest and most elementary description, of some of the leading stories connected with the History and Mythology of Greece and Rome.
