After Christianity spread across Northern Europe, the Church sought to eliminate Germanic heathenism and its symbols. Among them was the cat, long associated with Freyja, the goddess of Seiðr and sacred feminine power. Once revered as her companion and a symbol of intuition and unseen forces, the cat was later recast by the Church as a sign of witchcraft and demonic influence. Despite this shift, the older perception never fully disappeared. Cats have always been seen as mysterious and highly perceptive, often behaving in ways that suggest an awareness beyond ordinary senses. Even today, they are regarded as independent, watchful creatures that seem connected to something unseen. For many, cats still carry the quiet echo of their ancient role—symbolically, if not literally, remaining the enduring “children” of Freyja in Midgard.
