The United States is at a crossroads. Growing economic inequality, political polarization, and ecological crises threaten the very foundations of our democracy. Trust in institutions has plummeted, and social cohesion seems increasingly elusive. Our grand experiment is struggling, but not failing. American democracy is a work in progress. Agriculture is a prerequisite for modern civilization. Agricultural systems tend to reflect and support a society's prevailing social order. The Weakening of American Democracy can be correlated with the escalating loss of food sovereignty. We examine the historical connection between agriculture and democracy, how we, in America, arrived at our current situation, and actions we can take to restore a democracy-friendly system of agriculture. In doing so, we can address several of our most vexing economic, social, and environmental problems.
