Set in the Depression-drought-dustbowl era of the Dirty Thirties, the book is themed to the tenacity of people who refused to let adverse weather and other devastating conditions get the better of them. They stayed through it all to be rewarded when the seven-year drought from 1932 to 1939 finally ended, replaced by an amazing degree of prosperity with the introduction of a new crop, broomcorn.
The story is bookended by two significant dates: October 24, 1929 -- The Wall Street crash that essentially marked the beginning of the Depression; and December 7, 1941 -- a date that needs no amplification.
