Set in the medieval period, a time of turmoil for much of England. Religious intolerance and other types of bigotries are explored in a multi-layer story. It is based in local mythology and on actual events in the history of the town, Saffron Walden in Essex.
A lone thief hangs from a precipice as a watchman does his rounds. The daring thief is called Merith and she is out to steal, but she is also a novice priest. Ichmarr the Goddess of Thievery has a rather different religion, which demands more than prayer from her priests. Through being enshrined into full priesthood, Merith is granted the power to change into animals by Ichmarr to help her achieve her mission. As Merith tries out her new abilities a team is gathered to further aid her on a holy quest, to recover the word of Ichmarr from a secret maze. In the mists of dawn, a fight in the dark, capture, torture and assault enrage the inexperienced Merith to kill using her new powers of shape-shifting and majick.
