THE FLAMING JEWEL is an adventure novel by American author ROBERT W. CHAMBERS first published in 1922 by the George M. Doran Company of New York. Unlike the writer’s famous supernatural works, THE FLAMING JEWEL is set primarily in the rugged North Woods of upstate New York and Canada. The story follows a dangerous struggle for possession of a fabled, stolen ruby known as the "Flaming Jewel.” The titular jewel was originally stolen from Grand Duchess Theodorica of Estonia by an international thief named José Quintana. James Darragh (posing as a thief named Hal Smith) is on a mission to recover the gem for the Grand Duchess. The plot intertwines various factions, including Quintana's gang, diamond brokers like Emanuel Sard, and local state troopers, all vying for the treasure amidst a backdrop of betrayal and romance.
