In the Rhondda Valley in 1985 it’s getting dark and the myths and nightmares are still in town. As the miner’s strike enters its final chapter a killer stalks young girl activists who support the strike. Using cryptic and Satanic imagery he taunts the police while seeming to hint at a sinister conspiracy at the heart of government and state. Who is the killer and what message is he trying to tell?
For Acting Detective Inspector Terry Vaughan, the case poses threats and surprises at every turn and challenges all the certainties he previously held dear. Already alienated from his mining family, all of whom support the strike, he now finds that he can’t trust his colleagues either, and is forced to forge unlikely alliances in order to get close to the truth.
Among those alliances, journalist Orla O’Regan has been trying to expose a Deep State paedophile ring for years, linking North Wales care homes to sinister activities in Dolphin Square, Pimlico, including the squalid murder of an eight-year-old Asian boy on the day of the Royal Jubilee in 1977. Under fire, even from her own editor, she is convinced of a connection between the paedophile conspiracy and the South Wales murders. Sceptical at first, Terry is persuaded to Orla’s way of thinking when he realises that corrupt police officers, including his own superior, are covering the tracks of the killer.
Finally, both Terry and Orla, and their unlikely new confederates drawn from the striking mining community find themselves in a race against time to save the most recently abducted girl while the killer reveals his own agenda and a cabal of corrupt cops move in for the kill.
