When Peter and Jenny Farrow come from London to rent a charming mews cottage in the Lake District, they receive a warm welcome from the villagers of Greenways. Reluctant at first, Peter plans to find inspiration for his artwork in the wild but beautiful landscape. Jenny hopes to heal the fractures in their fragile relationship, but she harbours a secret which threatens to separate them forever. Florence Bawden, an impressionable girl, looks set to marry a local landowner's son without love. Affected by the arrival of the Farrows, her kindred connection with Peter leads her to fall in love with him. Before long Florence and Jenny are competing for Peter's affection and, inevitably, their lives set upon a tragic course.
