Searching for a Better Life
The Wall Family’s Journey from Loughrea in Galway to Ennistymon in Clare — and then to the Other Side of the World
Usually printed in 3 - 5 business days
Searching for a Better Life traces the journey of one Irish family from East Galway to Clare then to a new start on the far side of the world. It follows the lives of ordinary people — stonemasons, dressmakers, parents and children — as they faced hardship, loss and the uncertainty of a changing Ireland. Through it all ran a simple belief: that somewhere else, life might be better. It draws on some of the more colourful and lesser-known stories of the time — including local scandals, errant clergy, and accounts of the great gale that swept through the west of Ireland
Drawing on parish records, local histories and journeys back to the places where it all began, Ross Wall brings to life the people behind the names — their decisions, their sacrifices, and the legacy they left behind.
A story of ordinary lives — and the generations they shaped.
