Gwababa – a word bastardised by township folks and assigned to the terror that is brewed within teenage boy’s hearts when approaching girls with the intention of courting them, was no stranger to young Alex in 1981. Even his Standard Eight mastery of Mathematics and Physical Science, coupled with his deep knowledge of literature and movies could not give him the formula needed to overcome his fear. He even considered skills he learned from evading marauding bullies in his weekend piece job circles, as a tool to utilise to get the girl of his dream, Genevieve, but that also could not yield any potential results. His next step was buying a book that no had had read at school, at a cost of Five rands and Twenty-Five cents, to see if that will not give him the edge needed to conquer Gwababa and win Genevieve over.
