This collection of pieces for the classical guitar retains many of the stylistic features cultivated in Stone’s previous compositions: structural profundity, complex maneuverability, and unabated whimsy, carefully crafted with a deep understanding of classical tradition. Stone continues to explore the Romanza and Fantasia species of composition to great effect. The third piece is of a unique design which brings together the contrapuntal depth of a fugue, as well as the interest which can be found in the contrasting episodes of a rondo. The final piece is a monumental step in Stone’s compositional output: a Theme and Variation filled with charm, dramatics, and virtuosic passages.
