The Little Red Book (Quotations from Chairman Mao Tse-tung ) is a collection of statements and speeches by Mao Zedong, the founding leader of the People's Republic of China. First published in 1964, it was widely distributed during the Cultural Revolution (1966–1976) and became a symbol of Communist ideology in China. The book covers a range of political, military, and philosophical topics, including class struggle, socialism, self-reliance, revolution, and discipline. It was used as a tool for political education and propaganda, encouraging loyalty to Mao and the Communist Party. Millions of copies were printed, making it one of the most widely circulated books in history. While The Little Red Book played a key role in shaping China's political landscape in the 20th century, it remains a controversial text, associated with the upheavals of the Cultural Revolution. Today, it is studied as a historical artifact of Maoist thought and Chinese history.
