Max Everly, a curious 12-year-old who lives on Shadow Street, discovers an old, unlabeled TV remote hidden in his attic among his dad’s forgotten electronics. The moment Max picks it up, the unplugged TV in his room flickers to life—displaying not channels, but real-life scenes: his mom in the kitchen, his classmates at school, even private conversations happening far away. The remote seems to allow him to “tune in” to the real world, anytime, anywhere. At first, Max is fascinated—and then addicted. He uses the remote to spy, to avoid trouble, and eventually to rewind moments in his life. With a click, he undoes spilled drinks, failed quizzes, and awkward conversations. But each time he rewinds, something feels off. People act strangely. Time slips. And soon, he begins seeing himself on the screen—except this version of Max moves out of sync and smiles just a little too wide. As Max’s reality begins to glitch—TVs turning on by themselves, people freezing mid-sentence, objects moving without explanation—he encounters a mysterious substitute teacher named Mr. Thorne, who cryptically warns him that “the remote isn’t yours. It’s watching you too.” In a terrifying final act, Max sees a version of himself standing behind him on the TV. When he turns around, he’s alone. But moments later, he vanishes from the real world—leaving only the remote behind. The story ends with Kelsie, Max’s friend, discovering the remote on her doorstep. Her TV flickers on.
