Chrome Kingdom’s highly esteemed Obsidian Academy teaches the art of controlling the five elements, and after eleven years of training, seventeen-year-old Marie Aleksandr faces the test that will decide the rest of her life. She also knows she has a cataclysmic chance of failing. It isn’t for lack of trying, and it isn’t for lack of skill. She simply hasn’t done the one thing that all students accomplish long before the test: specialize as a Tangible, Intangible, or Spiritual. There are worse things she could do to hinder her focus, such as end a two-year relationship in an unintentionally messy manner, or allow her feelings to get the best of her during lessons with her private instructor. Then, the very night before the test, her world shifts. Undesirables enter from outside the kingdom’s impenetrable walls, and they’re coming for her. The biggest test of her life takes a sudden twist, and all at the icy fingertips of a feared Dead One as he takes everything she once knew and rips it away.
