Sudan has around 250 pyramids. Egypt has fewer than 140. Most people have never heard that, and the reason isn't a lack of evidence. For three thousand years, a kingdom called Kush ran the stretch of Nile that's now northern Sudan. Its kings conquered Egypt and ruled it for the better part of a century. Its queens fought the Roman army and negotiated terms that Augustus honored. Its people built a city of mudbrick that still stands after four thousand years, smelted iron beside the river, invented an alphabet of their own, and buried their rulers under steep-sided pyramids for eleven hundred years after Egypt had given up building them. Written for readers aged nine to twelve, this is the full span of that story — from cattle herders in 3800 BCE through the pharaoh Taharqa, the kandake Amanirenas, the lion god Apedemak, and the six-hundred-year peace treaty that a Christian Nubian kingdom held with its Muslim neighbor.
