The A section is an adventurous harmonic conception, sparked by an effective use of the lower VI chord (E flat seventh in the key of G here). The thirty-two-measure trio is one of Morton’s most original strains, despite its reliance in the first few measures on the pop blues song “Go Back Where You Stayed Last Night.” In the key of C, he creates a pedal-tone effect with G in the bass with repeated patterns of first C-G, then D-G.
