O is for Overland is a book about a six month trip I took from Istanbul to Cape Town with one of the many overland companies that cover various routes across Africa. We begin by exploring the Middle East, a year on from the September 11th terrorist attacks, before flying from Cairo to Addis Ababa, and continuing by road to Cape Town. We pass through game parks and deserts, and have close encounters with unusual tribes, mountain gorillas, lions, and cheetahs. Share in my ups and downs, and learn something of the countries we travel through along the way, as I recount the interaction between a group of largely disparate individuals – one of whom is my sister – and the inevitable friction that arises, all from the perspective of a self-confessed loner.
