Jane has been seeing Dr. Oberman - therapist, guru and love object - hoping he can save her from a past she cannot bear to face. When he gets too close to the truth, she flees, and begins a long-distance road trip through American towns and European capitals. But is the journey real or just a figment of Jane’s troubled psyche? Jane conveys the details of her life using fantasy, dream sequences, stream-of-consciousness lists, Polaroid snapshots, excerpts of her therapy sessions and sometimes even outright lies. As she travels, Jane muses on martyred saints, Freudian theory, Renaissance art and lost love. Falling Awake is a story about the messiness of life, the strength we attribute to particular events and the way one woman struggles to overcome the forces of her “fate”. It chronicles the damage human beings do to one another, both deliberately and unwittingly, but is ultimately about redemption and the power that we all possess to save ourselves.
