Letters Home from a B-17 Pilot in WWII tells the story of Mike Miller, a young man whose journey through military service began with enlistment and flight training and led him to become a B-17 pilot during World War II. The book follows his progression through basic and advanced flight schools, B-17 combat training, and his service with the Fifteenth Air Force, 2nd Bombardment Group, 429th Squadron, in North Africa and Italy.
At the heart of the book are the hundreds of handwritten letters Mike sent home to his family. Preserved by his mother, these letters provide his own perspective on military life, training, missions, fellow servicemen, uncertainty, and his experiences during the war. His pilot logbook, military documents, photographs, and other family records were also used to place his letters and service in context.
