There are four risk parameters to be addressed prior to drilling a exploration well:
Trap,
Seal,
Reservoir,
and hydrocarbon charge.
These four components must be in-place for an exploration, or production well to be successful. Assessing the trap and reservoir risks are routine tasks of earth scientists in all hydrocarbon exploration companies.
