Sunlight At Midnight

Chapter One: Home

BySyrah Chylere

Set in a not too distant future, America has been divided into two countries in constant conflict: devout and conservative Gildea to the West and liberal Newam to the East. The series Sunlight at Midnight begins in the West, and narrates the story of a young, patriotic woman through her journey of disillusionment as she is forced to redefine her values and priorities when the light is shone into the darkness of her country's actions. More than just a coming of age tale, the story highlights the cognitive resistance when faced with uncomfortable truths hidden beneath beautiful lies, and the complex grief in accepting those truths, moving forward with life after that acceptance, as well as themes like classism, sexism, and covert oppression. "Home" introduces us to Victoria and her close-knit family (her father Abram, her brother Victor, and their house servant Gigi) six months before Victoria's maturity ceremony whereupon she will not be permitted contact with her family of origin.
