The two part book presents a method for calculating three dimensional bevel gear geometry accurately without detailed knowledge of the generating tool and machine settings. In the first part, a set of tools are developed using an engineering approach and special notation which makes complex three dimensional bevel gear geometry easy to follow and visualize. The example in the second part demonstrates the use of the tools to solve not only a complex gearing problem but a practical problem that needed a solution. At the present time bevel gear strength ratings are based on a spur gear approximation. The formulas presented calculate true bevel gear geometry using basic gear parameters as input. They provide a basis for the next generation of strength rating calculations.
