Scholars influenced by the Judeo-Christian teachings of the past fifteen or twenty centuries insisted that the gods of mythology were figments of the imagination of storytellers who simply grafted onto their creations their own human frailties and attributes. That wouldn't be so hard to accept had the gods not left other evidence of their existence except in fable. Fortunately, there is a lot of other evidence in the form of tangible, hard, three-dimensional, physical objects—immeasurably old things; prehistoric structures whose origin is lost in humanity's dim past, which time could not erase; artifacts too refined to have been made by the humans who lived at the time.
