“Thinking – a mental process, in which symbols or pictorial representations of objects, events, or actions are generated, transformed, or combined.” That, bizarrely, is apparently an ‘official’, MODERN definition. I can only hope that by the time Scotty grinds me up, you will have deconstructed this sentence for yourselves and consigned it to the little round file on the floor. Here’s another: “Thinking is problem-solving.” Do people get PAID for this? Even pond-slime would not bother to learn a maze, if THIS is what was waiting for them at the end. But … spoiler!!! … there are no ‘mental processes’; there are no ‘pictorial representations’; there are no ‘symbols’ in the brain. EXCEPT in that one brief MOMENT BY MOMENT, the instant of generation-and-subjective-awareness-of each successive brief TINY ‘conscious’ event. But because those events make up our subjective world, we have taken for granted that THEY ARE OUR THINKING. They are not. ‘Thinking’ is something else entirely …
