There is a tendency in our culture to spend large, meaningful words on very small things. We say we “love” peanut butter and call sneakers “awesome,” and in doing so, we thin out the very vocabulary meant to describe what truly matters. If I use my strongest words on the trivial, what language remains for the woman who has walked beside me for fifty years—or for the God to whom I pray? So I hesitate to overstate what this small collection of prayers has done for me. It has not “revolutionized my prayer life in a radical, life-changing way.” But to say it has merely “helped” would be an understatement. It has helped me focus. Helped me be consistent. Helped me aim my prayers toward what matters most. In a quiet, steady way, God has used these simple prayer lists to shape me as I continue learning how to pray. The idea of crafting one-sentence prayers came relatively recently, considering my seventy years of having ideas come and go. Why twenty at first? Why these particular themes? Perhaps the answer is as simple as this: I realized how often I prayed about misplaced keys and how rarely I prayed about the deeper matters of the heart and soul. Once I began shaping my prayers around these concise, intentional sentences, I sensed I might be onto something. So I expanded the list. I tweaked and edited. Even now, the wording shifts slightly each time I pray them. They are living sentences, shaped in real time before God. Now I offer them to you—the reader, the intercessor, the one who pleads with God. My hope is not that you will adopt my words permanently, but that they might guide your daily prayers for a season. Perhaps you will eventually craft your own one-sentence prayers that better reflect your voice and longings. But for now, if you wish, you may borrow mine.
