Happiness is a skill, not a lucky break. Our happiness is not under the control of others. We can learn how to make ourselves happy. Recognition of this fact is highly empowering. Here is some evidence. Stephen Hawking, the renowned physicist, endured amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, for decades. Despite severe physical limitations, he authored influential books, using a specialised computer system operated by blowing through a tube. Although he exceeded medical expectations regarding his life span, he appeared content. While it’s likely he would have preferred physical health, Hawking exemplified resilience, mastering the skill of finding happiness despite challenges that might overwhelm others.1 Once individuals surpass the poverty line, additional income does not significantly enhance happiness. Studies2 reveal that billionaires are not necessarily happier than middle-class individuals. Cultural comparisons show that the Irish rate themselves higher on happiness scales than the Japanese, despite a lower average standard of living. Lottery winners experience temporary increases in happiness post-win, but their happiness levels eventually return to the general average. Research3 indicates that happiness levels are not significantly different based solely on sex, race, or age. Studies show that these demographic factors do not have a substantial impact on a person’s reported level of happiness, supporting the idea that happiness is largely influenced by other factors, such as individual mindset and circumstances. Why should you or your employer care if you are happy? Happy leaders get more done through their people. This is because people prefer to spend time with someone who is happy, and they avoid unhappy people. Leaders need time with people to influence their behaviour, which is what leadership is about. Who wants to follow a sourpuss? Therefore, the happier you are, the more people will want to spend time with you, giving you more opportunities to influence their behaviour. This book will help you become and stay happy, both in life and at work.
