Previous volumes have addressed the small scale. This book addresses the large scale. Part I addresses the universe; the interstellar medium, and the formation of stars and galaxies, and discusses theories of the origin of the Universe, including the Big Bang theory and the Lambda-CDM model. Part II describes what is known about the Sun. Part III addresses the Solar System, describing in detail the 3 planets in the Inner Solar System, - Mercury, Venus and Mars - leaving the Earth to its own section; the planets in the Outer Solar System - Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune - and other objects in the Solar System, including asteroids, comets, the Kuiper Belt and Oort Cloud. Part IV focusses on the Earth. Part V addresses the Moon, and the Earth-Moon system, including the program of missions to the Moon. In the 2nd Edition, new sections on star formation and the origin of the solar system, including the Nebular Theory and the Capture Theory, have been added at the end of Part I and in Part II.
