There is a peculiar mathematics to the kingdom of God, where affliction is not subtracted from destiny but multiplied into it. No life in Scripture demonstrates this arithmetic more vividly than the life of Joseph, the eleventh son of Jacob, whose journey from the pastures of Canaan to the throne room of Egypt reads less like a biography and more like a parable written in real time. Joseph's story is bracketed by two objects that define the shape of his calling: a coat of many colors, torn from his back by jealous hands, and a ring of authority, placed on his finger by a grateful king. Between the coat and the ring lies a corridor of affliction — a pit, a slave's chain, a false accusation, a forgotten promise, two long years in a dungeon. Scripture does not rush past this corridor. Neither should we. This book is written for the man or woman walking through their own corridor — the season between the coat that was taken and the ring that has not yet arrived. It is written to insist, with the full weight of Genesis 37 through 50, that the pit is not the end of the story, that Potiphar's house is not a wasted assignment, that the prison has a purpose, and that the God who remembers cupbearers does not forget the afflicted. We will walk through Joseph's afflictions not to dwell in their darkness, but to trace the hidden hand of providence moving beneath them — the hand that Joseph himself would later name when he told his trembling brothers, "ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good" (Genesis 50:20). That confession is the theological center of this entire book. Everything before it explains how a man arrives at such forgiveness. Everything after it shows what that forgiveness makes possible. May this study strengthen every reader presently in a pit, silent in a prison, or waiting on a promise that seems delayed. The ring is being prepared. Walk on.
