In the pilot volume of the comic book series “Programming and Mathematics,” you'll embark on an extraordinary journey into a world dominated by recreational mathematics, algorithms, logic, programming, and our unique sense of humour. As you learn and tackle tasks, you'll be accompanied by two main characters: Ramsy the Ram and his good friend, Barky the Wolf. Both of them are just starting to learn programming, and they would really appreciate it if you didn't leave them to figure it out all on their own!
The designation “A1” in the book title refers to the basic level of complexity (denoted by “A”) and the first part (denoted by “1”). The goal of the first volume is to introduce readers to the fundamentals of the Clojure programming language, including symbolic expressions, arithmetic, truth values, and basic data structures (vectors). Through the examples provided, we aim to make readers aware that common tasks they encounter in mathematics textbooks can be equally well expressed in the language of programming. We are taking this path because programming, as both a skill and an art, has many connections with mathematics, primarily in how it encourages individuals to think and develop their abstract reasoning abilities. This is precisely what we aim to promote through our book.
The book is designed as a textbook with a workbook component. It is thematically divided into 25 chapters. Within each chapter, you will become acquainted with new concepts and principles alongside our heroes. You will also have the opportunity to apply your ingenuity when solving problems.
Thanks to the graded complexity of the tasks, this book is suitable for readers of all age groups, regardless of their prior experience. You will find examples suitable for children as young as seven, as well as challenges that can engage much older readers. Therefore, we can recommend it as a supplementary workbook for traditional mathematics courses or as an alternative textbook for homeschooling or extracurricular activities.
As a complement to this textbook, you can also purchase the book “Solutions Manual A1,” which provides model solutions to all the exercises. For additional information and supplementary materials, you can support us on Patreon.
