Living during slavery was a hard enough task; but imagine running away from slavery, and finding yourself among people, who thinks that you're crazy, and don't believe that you're a slave. Imagine trying to convince these same people that you were a slave and that you don't understand what happened to you or where you are.
Such was the case with Della. Somewhere between the time that she escaped from the Chambrey plantation, to when she emerged from the woods, a transition took place. She found herself in the midst of people where it didn't matter that she was a slave; Where she was knowledgeable in survival, but her survival skills weren't necessary.
If she is not in Heaven, then where is she? Della expects to see God at any minute, because when you get to Heaven, you must see God. June 16, 1799
