Originally published in 1901 as part of The Riverside Biographical Series, this biography depicts the life of Ulysses S. Grant, the victorious military commander during the Civil War, who would later become the 18th President of the United States.
Grant had a very long military career, which began upon his graduation from West Point in 1843. During the Mexican War, Lieutenant Grant served under Generals Zachary Taylor and Winfield Scott. Later, during the Civil War, the Union Army - under General Grant's command - was able to successfully defeat the Confederate forces.
