In the late 1950’s and 1960’s, in the Mexican American barrio of south El Paso, Texas, a group of boys (“vatos’) came together. The El Paso Boys’ Club opened a unit in the housing development there known as the Paisano Projects ostensibly to put a lid on its juvenile delinquency problem. The Club offered a place for these vatos to engage in after-school sports and other developmental activities as alternatives to the otherwise well-established patterns of crime, violence and drugs.
A disproportionate number of these vatos—like many other American immigrants--emerged quite successfully from that assimilation adventure that started at the Boys’ Club. They got educations; many of them going on beyond high school to earn college and professional degrees. They served their country when the Vietnam War erupted. They got good jobs and thus provided well for their families. Eventually, they became very much a part of society, achieved the American Dream and, as they arrived at middle-age, they discovered the amazing game of golf.
This book is a memoir-chronical about the 35 years during which these vatos have been playing golf together. It revolves around a yearly event called “Curada Cincha,” and how the game of golf has further bonded this group of boys who now are mostly elderly men. The author relates in detail the scoring statistics and rules and recognizes the winners but, more importantly, he recalls anecdotes of the interesting and often funny occurrences that took place during the 30+ Curada Cincha tournaments that have transpired since they started. The vatos come to these annual events strictly to have fun with many of the same friends who, over the years, have become more like brothers and, as a result, they have created an enduring tradition of golf and camaraderie.
