John R Dean was born into a working class family in Leicester, England. As a youth he played rugby for his school and represented his county. Leaving school he sold books in a department store and worked in buildings maintenance before embarking on a lengthy career with British Railways designing and maintaining permanent way. Now retired, he pursues his passion for writing and currently resides in 'the country of my heart', Nottinghamshire, England.
