Ameera Salman

Passionate about words since childhood, Salman has written stories, poems, essays, and, later, journalistic works. This passion came with a love for reading and a tedious interest in grammar. In middle school, Salman discovered performance poetry after reading an original piece to her seventh grade English class. Salman later competed in two Ann Arbor poetry slam competitions and planned to compete in a third, but could not due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Not only did Salman compete with their poetry, but they have also read at numerous scheduled readings and open mics. In 2019, Salman self-published her first book "She chose to live: a collection of poetry and prose." In 2021, Salman graduated from Community High School and began college at Eastern Michigan University. Salman quickly became a leader on campus, earning the elected position of Student Body Vice President, as well as President of Planned Parenthood Generation Action @EMU, and Editor-in-Chief of Cellar Roots, EMU's Fine Arts Magazine. Salman now serves as Editor-in-Chief of The Eastern Echo, EMU's independent student-run newspaper. Salman's poetry and creative writing can also be found in a variety of publications, including Voice at Community High School in Ann Arbor, Mich., and GUTS zine based in Brooklyn, New York. love is water was written over five years and created while Salman obtained their Bachelor’s degree in Journalism.
