Residing in Cincinnati, Smith owns Walking With History LLC, a tour company that provides customized tours of Civil War battlefields, mostly in Kentucky. He created his first publication, The War Department Tablets of the Fort Donelson National Battlefield, in an effort to have visitors of that park become a bit more immersed in Fort Donelson's history by exploring the various War Department tablets that were established in the 1930s. Since then Smith has provided a revised edition of Peter Clark's The Black Brigade of Cincinnati, and had edited three sets of Civil War letters.
