Ken H. Simmons, II is an African American architect, project manager, entrepreneur, and author who has lived and worked in Johannesburg, South Africa, for over three decades. Born and raised in Oakland, California, he relocated to South Africa in the mid-1990s and has since built a life, family, and career rooted in long-term engagement with the country. His work focuses on providing practical, experience-based guidance for African Americans engaging with Africa beyond tourism, with particular attention to relocation planning, property ownership, and informed decision-making. Drawing on lived experience rather than theory, his writing reflects the realities, opportunities, and responsibilities of building a sustainable life on the continent. In addition to his professional background, Simmons has worked in the publishing industry as a freelance editor, columnist, and publisher. His editorial and writing experience includes book editing, newspaper column writing, and leading the editorial and publishing efforts of a digital magazine serving a global audience. He is the author of Black to the Motherland.
