About
Katsuya Izumikawa
Hello and welcome! I am Katsuya Izumikawa the Sandaime Sōke, or third generation inheritor, of the International Karate-dō Gōjū-ryū Senbukai. I was born in 1945 as the second son of Kanki Izumikawa or the Shodai Sōke of the Senbukai Dojo. My father was a student of Seiko Higa, and the first Gōjū-ryū master to move from Okinawa, the birthplace of Karate, to mainland Japan and open an Okinawan Gōjū-ryū Dōjō. I have inherited the techniques of the Koden, or Old-Style Teachings, of Gōjū-ryū from my father and brother. I have also extensively studied Daitō-ryū Aiki-Jūjutsu under Keisetsu Yoshimaru, who was a high-level disciple of Yukiyoshi Sagawa. I have learned the inner mysteries of Daitō-ryū Aiki-Jūjutsu from Keisetsu Yoshimaru and through this study, Izumikawa Sensei was able to discover the hidden principles found within Koden Gōjū-ryu and used that knowledge to develop new techniques such as the 163 Kakete (Kakie) techniques, as well as close combat fighting techniques using the ancient Okinawan concept of Meotode. I would be greatly satisfied if my book were to be of use to those who wish to take their martial arts studies to another level; while this book is written primarily for those who practice and study Karate, it will also be a significant help to those who practice Aiki-style systems as well. Lastly, my hope is to inspire others who study martial arts to follow a path to a deeper understanding of their chosen art.
