Megan Ensor
As Principal Piccolo of a Premier Military Band in Washington, DC, I have nearly two decades of professional experience performing and premiering Concert Band works. It’s a joy and a great honor to perform some of the most challenging works in the literature as well as premier & record new commissions and transcriptions by some of today’s most relevant composers. I’ve been a “band nerd” for as long as I’ve been playing. As a young flutist growing up in Pittsburgh, PA, my performance experience began and grew through my school ensembles and local district honor bands where I was introduced to many of the ‘warhorses’ this genre is known for. In college at the University of Akron and Youngstown State University, I was principal chair in both the Concert Band and Wind Ensemble where I was introduced to more advanced literature and a number of famous orchestral transcriptions like Strauss’ Til Eulenspeigel, Stravinky’s Firebird, and Dvorák’s Carnival Overture. My impetus for this book happened while proctoring a clarinet audition. While they nailed one orchestral excerpt after another, they struggled with many of the band excerpts, both technically and musically. I began to wonder how this applied to flutists. The answer became glaringly apparent: there was next-to-nothing in the flute world to aid and educate flutists on wind band literature. This book aims to fill that void.
