For over six decades, International Master, Dr. Nikolay Minev has been playing, researching, and teaching chess. He was the champion of his native Bulgaria in 1953, 1965, and 1966. He represented his country in six Chess Olympiads (1954, 1956, 1958, 1960, 1962, and 1966). For nearly three decades, Minev participated in high level international tournaments, three times qualifying for the FIDE Zonals (1954, 1963, and 1967). He was awarded the International Master title in 1960. An expert on endings and tactics, Minev was one of the principal contributors to Chess Informant’s Encyclopedia of Chess Endings series. He also contributed to early editions of the Encyclopedia of Chess Openings. He served for many years as editor of the Bulgarian national chess magazine Shakhmatna Misl and was a regular columnist for Inside Chess for over ten years. He has written or co-written more than 25 books.
