What paper and ink specifications should I use for my coloring book?

We recommend two product combinations for coloring books:

• Standard Color on 60# uncoated paper is best for the roughest possible texture.

• Standard Color on 80# coated is best for a silkier, smoother surface that accepts markers, crayon, and colored pencil.

Because the desired surface of a finished coloring book page can vary based on individual needs, it is best to create several different product combinations and test print them to find the ideal combination. It is important to note that Lulu uses a global network of printers, so minor variance in ink and paper is possible.

How can I prevent colors and ink from bleeding through the pages?

Print all coloring book pages one side only to prevent show-through. If your coloring book is intended for colored pencils or crayons, show-through is unlikely, but the only way to prevent this is to only print on one side of each page.

What's the difference between coated and uncoated paper?

Our 80# coated uses a clay surface treatment that changes the texture and finish of the paper. Coated digitally-compliant papers provide a base for your photos and prevent absorption which maintains a more crisp, bright image, where printing the same color images on an uncoated paper can darken and mute the same photos substantially. This is important when using Premium Color ink.

The line art commonly used for coloring books prints perfectly in Standard Color or Black & White and provides the most economical product for coloring books.

Can I sell my coloring books online?

Absolutely. You have several options.

You can sell your magazine through your own website using Lulu’s integrations with Shopify, Wix, and WooCommerce. The Direct Buy Button allows you to create an embed buy button for your site or a direct checkout link that can be shared on social media, in your email, or through a QR code. Lulu also offers a Print API that connects directly with our international network of printers.

Additionally, you can offer your coloring for sale on the Lulu Bookstore or, if it’s an eligible product, through retail distribution.

How long does it take to print & ship my coloring book?

All printers across Lulu’s global network have a production of 3-5 business days, but your shopping cart will display the estimated production time specific to your order.

Business days are Monday - Friday, and the first printing day is the day after the order is placed. For example, an order placed on a Monday will be sent to the printer by Tuesday and is expected to print between Thursday (day 3) and the following Monday (day 5).
