President and adventurer Theodore Roosevelt was a larger-than-life figure, mixing political wisdom and warrior pride with a great engagement with the natural world.
In 1910, after while Roosevelt was still alive, professor-tourned-journalist Albert Shaw sought to capture the man not just as he was, but as he was seen. To that end, he compiled this collection (originally published as A Cartoon History of Roosevelt's Career) of over six hundred cartoons that had appeared in the newspapers and magazines of the day, from his time as a member of the New York State Assembly through the end of his presidency and beyond. Ranging from derisive to worshipful, these cartoons tell the tale of the man and his time. Shaw’s accompanying text history shows you the moments that the cartoonists were commenting on.
This expanded version of his book adds on dozens of cartoons from Roosevelt’s final decade, after the original volume was published.
