The Imagist poet Amy Lowell first learned of haiku from her brother’s Japanese secretary, Tsunejiro Miyaoka. Her fusion of free-verse techniques with the traditional approach has earned her the ire of purists, but her 1921 haiku cycle, Twenty-four Hokku on a Modern Theme, retains its starling intimacy a century on.
This volume collects all of her haiku, as well as her other Japonisms.
