Shadows of The Commonwealth

The city never truly slept. Even in the quietest hours, lights flickered in distant apartments, cars hummed along empty streets, and somewhere far off, a train rumbled through the night. From a rooftop in Western Sydney, a boy watched it all. Jack Mercer was ten, small and unassuming, yet his eyes missed nothing. Every twitch of a hand, every hurried step, every fleeting glance was a story he read without sound. Born into scarcity, he had learned early that survival depended on seeing the world more clearly than anyone else. Tonight, as the moon cut pale lines across the cracked sidewalks, Jack traced the movements of a shadow below. He did not panic. He cataloged. He calculated. He promised himself, silently: he would rise above these streets, master the hidden world around him, and when the time came, no one would see him coming. The night waited, and so did he.
