After a TONUS PEREGRINUS concert in London a member of the audience was introduced to the ensemble and expressed his appreciation in impassioned terms: his name was Alexander Litvinenko. And so it was that, following his untimely death in 2006, TONUS PEREGRINUS was asked to sing at a private ceremony to commemorate his burial in Highgate Cemetery. A moving sequence of speeches in English and Russian was interspersed with unaccompanied choral music – a mixture of traditional Russian settings by Rachmaninov, Stravinsky, and Kalinnikov, and settings by the ensemble’s director, Antony Pitts, of There is a green hill far away, Adoro Te, and Libera me from the liturgy for the Requiem. TONUS PEREGRINUS once again sang in Alexander Litvinenko’s memory on the third anniversary of his death, including a specially-composed Lux aeterna – Kontakion of the Departed. Over almost two decades Antony Pitts has slowly assembled from these original works a monumental setting of the Requiem called 'Requiem for the Time of the End', including the Dies irae for SATB soloists, SSAATTBB consort, SSAATTBB choir, glockenspiel, solo (electric) violin, saxophone quartet, off-stage brass (2 trumpets, 1 trombone), harp, electric (fretless) bass, and percussion including up to six tam-tams.
