The Sign of Four

The Sign of Four was the second story of Sherlock Holmes, published in 1890. The main events take place in September 1888, and there are references to earlier years, 1882-1888 (Miss Mary Morstan received almost a pearl each year), 1882 (death of Major Sholto and Mary Morstan sees a strange advertisement, asking for her address), 1878 (death of Captain Arthur Morstan, father of Mary Morstan and Sholto’s companion), and far into the past, in India, narrated by Jonathan Small. Finally, this is the story of a government or power structure of four groups, which arise after the dissolution of one (from which they took away the treasure of Agra), and despite the difficulties, they remain united, each one with its autonomy, to retain or regain that control. Nonetheless, historically, this type of coalition is not viable. In the same way, the treasure hunt shows the desires to achieve happiness, discover the meaning of life, and transcend spiritually. The four thieves failed to meet these goals, their other two partners were also unsuccessful, and in the end neither the research team nor the Watson (four subgroups) were able to meet those objectives.
