On May 28, 1852, Nimrod O’Kelly was sentenced to hang for murder. The judge set his execution date for August 2. Yet, almost six years later, O’Kelly journeyed from Oregon to our nation’s capital, a free man. There is no doubt as to the identity of the murder victim, nor any question as to O’Kelly’s guilt or motive. But mystery surrounds the events which occurred after the slaying and the sentencing in Oregon’s first recorded murder case. This is how it came about.
