Patch Mountain
The Neighborhoods of Greenwood, Maine
Usually printed in 3 - 5 business days
Patch Mountain was the first neighborhood in Township No. Four—which became the town of Greenwood—to be settled.
The first settlers had a hard row to hoe. They could raise and grow their food, but money was hard to come by. A number of early settlers could not make their payments to the grantees and lost their homesteads. Others lost their farms to the town for back taxes or mortgaged their farms and lost them.
The county road over Patch Mountain was very hilly and not very popular with the teamsters. About 1820 this road was bypassed by the new Greenwood Road which was less hilly. The new road soon attracted all the through traffic and the old road over Patch Mountain was used for local traffic only.
This is a history of the early settlers and their homesteads from 1802 into the 1900s.
