Bethrothed at birth to Louis, the son of a German ruler, St. Elizabeth, princess of Hungary, was taken at the age of four to the Castle Wartburg (pictured on this cover) to be brought up with the family of her future husband. Disliked and often unkindly treated by the German nobles, the saintly little princess was beloved by the poor. When death robbed her of the protection of her young husband, she and her children were forced to leave the castle. Elizabeth spent the rest of her short life serving the sick poor. Only four years after her death she was canonzed and became St. Elizabeth of Hungary.
